The Summer of Open Wine Cellars in the Karst

Meeting wine producers in their local environment, which inspires them and reflects in their wine, is a unique opportunity to discover and experience a region. Selected Karst wine producers, wine growers and farms will open their cellars to introduce you to their story about life in the Karst region and its heritage. Visit them during the Summer of Open Wine Cellars, from 10th June until 30th August.

The Summer of Open Wine Cellars in the Karst

The Karst is a wine growing region with a tradition of wine production and cultivation that is hundreds of years old. The region embraces over 650 hectares of vineyards, set on the sunny Karst plateau. The cultivation of the Refosco grape variety, the most common variety in the Karst region, produces the top quality dark red wine Teran, a Slovenian wine speciality. Teran is a native Slovenian wine, bearing the recognised traditional mark, and is served with the Karst air-dried prosciutto, called “kraški pršut” – the best of these are left to dry in the typical bora wind for 24 months.

Winemakers also produce other wines, such as an old variety of Vitovska Grganja, Malvasia, Chardonnay and Sauvignon, as well as red Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Visit the winemakers at the Open Wine Cellar during the summer for wine tastings and a culinary getaway. Details on the wine producers, opening hours, a map and suggestions for trips in the Karst region are available here.
