Medieval memories in green Slovenia

Medieval times in Slovenia have long gone, but the remains of city walls create beautiful scenery and unforgettable experiences when exploring the land between the Mediterranean and the Alps. Feel the sea breeze caressing the medieval walls and cobblestone streets of Piran and indulge yourself with a pinch of salty cultural adventures. In the opposite corner of Slovenia, in the north-east, Maribor awaits you for a wine tasting at the Old Vine House, the home of the world’s oldest vine and a kind of a cultural embassy of the Slovenian winemaking tradition.

Medieval memories in green Slovenia

The coastal town of Piran has flourished due to salt production and trade, and was under Venetian governance from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Today, in one of the most picturesque and romantic Slovenian towns, the remains of the town gates and town walls – the oldest parts date back to the 7th century – still stand strong above Piran. A walk along the walls and defending towers offers stunning views of the town with Tartini Square, the colourful houses, the iconic St. George's Parish Church, the Slovenian coastline and the Adriatic Sea. It is also a perfect venue for watching sunsets and trying local delicacies, enriched with ‘fleur du sel’, the word-class salt still made in the Piran saltpans.

Maribor, the second biggest Slovenian city, received its city rights when still surrounded by walls in the 13th century. The city is home to the oldest vine in the world. It grows at the Old Vine House, which dates from the 16th century when it used to be part of the city walls. In medieval times the House survived several fires, but the resilient 400-year old vine has made it unscathed to the present day. Visit the wine shop and treat yourself to a wine tasting with top quality wines, or celebrate at traditional events in front of the House, then head to the top-notch opera at National Theatre of Maribor.
