The oldest Biennial of Design in Europe

The Biennial of Design in Ljubljana is an international platform for new approaches in design. BIO was founded in 1963, making it the first design biennial in Europe. Don’t miss it this year! It takes place from 25th May to 29th October in Ljubljana and seven other Slovenian towns and cities.

The first part of the BIO takes place in Ljubljana, with the opening on the 25th May at the Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) under the slogan BIO 25: FARAWAY, SO CLOSE. This year’s 25th edition is expanding to other locations in Slovenia - Kočevje, Kobarid, Trbovlje, Grosuplje, Lendava, Piran and Koper.

Participants of the Biennial were selected with an open call, which received 375 applications from 38 countries. Selected international designers and architects create and cooperate with Slovenian inspirers within seven episodes: Underground Release, Occupying Woods, After Utopia, Brand New Coexistence, Countryside Reloaded, Resilience of The Past and New Heroes.

BIO is structured as a long-term collaborative process, where teams of designers and multidisciplinary agents develop alternatives to established systems. The Biennial works as a testing ground, where design is employed as a tool to question and improve our daily lives, using different multidisciplinary design. The diverse array of topics resonates with both local and global demands, with its comprehensive projects aimed at creating resilient structures that develop over time, often beyond the duration of the Biennial.
