10th anniversary of the Old Vine House
In the heart of Maribor, the oldest vine in the world still grows in front of the Old Vine House. The confirmed age of this “Žametovka” or “Modra Kavčina” vine is over 400 years, which won it a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest noble vine in the world still bearing grapes. Visit the Old Vine House, temple of wine tradition and culture, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Don’t miss the special celebration on 21st April.

Honour the 10th anniversary of the Old Vine House with a visit to two new exhibitions and a concert by the Slovenian singer Bilbi, which takes place in the House on 21st April. In the spirit of celebration, don’t miss the wine tasting and degustation of local culinary specialities. More information about the programme are available HERE.
The history of the Old Vine House and vine itself is fascinating. The house used to be part of the city wall and was often in the centre of fights between invaders and the defenders of the city. In medieval times the house was damaged by several fires and it even survived a World War II bombing. During all this time, the resilient vine “Žametovka” was growing in front of the house, where it remains to the present day.
Nowadays the Old Vine House is a temple of the wine tradition and culture of Maribor and Slovenia. You can attend a guided tour of winemaking and its traditions, visit a museum exhibition or treat yourself to a wine tasting.
