The Month of Asparagus in the Karst Region

In April and May it’s asparagus time in green, active and healthy Slovenia. Wild asparagus is one of the most highly valued spring delicacies, rich in minerals and antioxidants. Every year from April to May, selected inns, restaurants and farms in the Karst region join together and organise a Month of Asparagus, offering special menus with wild asparagus. The delicious menus are combination of traditional Karst cuisine and seasonal food. See the full programme and selected restaurants and their menus HERE.

Wild asparagus is an extremely healthy plant with a distinctive taste, which is slightly more bitter than cultivated asparagus. Asparagus was highly valued for its good qualities by the ancient Romans. Experts recommend it for different diets and its positive effect on the urethras and kidneys. It encourages body cleansing and detoxification. It is an excellent antioxidant, and it also has aphrodisiac qualities.

Asparagus production in Slovenia almost came to an end after World War II, but luckily came back to life in the late 1980s and 90s. Production is still relatively small, but it is of an exceptional quality and exquisite flavor. Many families even grow their own asparagus in their gardens.
