Slovenia celebrates Slovenian cultural holiday

Every 8th February, Slovenia celebrates the memory of the famous Slovenian poet, France Prešeren, who wrote the Slovenian national anthem. Slovenians celebrate this day with cultural events and festivals which encourage the public to remember the contributions of Prešeren to the country’s culture. Most of the cultural events are free of charge. Here are some of our recommendations:

Prešeren fair in Kranj is a real eye-catcher and each year attracts more than 20,000 visitors, who enjoy the arts and crafts exhibition and taste the delicacies while enjoying the folk dances and music concerts. You can meet many interesting characters from the past, wearing typical bourgeois clothes and hairstyles. Among them you can also spot the mysterious Prešeren.

Vrba at Žirovnici (close to Bled) is the hometown of France Prešeren. On 8th February the whole village and its surroundings pulse to the cultural beat. At Janša’s beehives, beekeepers offer you a taste of honey, while at Žirovnica you can take a ride in a traditional horse carriage, “lojtrnik”. Don’t miss the house where France Prešeren was born, where you can attend a cultural programme with a central ceremony of musical performances, recitations of poetry and delicacies of local providers.

In Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, the National Museum Slovenia and Ljubljana Castle are preparing an Open Day, where you can visit all the exhibitions and programmes free of charge. Guided tours around the museums and workshops are especially interesting for families with children.

The Lipica Stud Farm near Sežana traditionally organises a special show, The Fairy Tale in White, with white Lipizzaner stallions. The show starts at 14:00, while guided tours around the Lipica estate take place every hour on the hour.
