Postojna Cave management, the story of Success

What is the story behind Postojna Cave, Slovenia's top tourist attraction? The management of the Postojna Cave Park, the upside down underground heaven, has generated an estimated EUR 20 million in revenue and EUR 5 million in net profit this year, recording a growth of 12 % and 33 %, respectively. The most famous cave in Europe welcomed 1.1 million visitors by the end of the year after welcoming its millionth visitor in November.

Postojna Cave management, the story of Success

The company presented its results in late December with the CEO Marjan Batagelj, announcing further investments and plans for 2017. Besides the successful business results, Postojna Cave is proud of its new batch of cave olms (human fish), which hatched at the beginning of 2016 and immediately became media attraction all over the world due to the miraculous reproduction process. The ‘baby dragons’ are growing fast – the 21 youngsters are now already between five and six centimetres long.

The Postojna cave Park is now a destination of its own, welcoming guests in the only country in the world with two natural floors – above and below the ground, as the chairman Marjan Batagelj likes to point out. This year they opened a completely renovated hotel Jama. Within the Park visitors can enjoy different underground adventures in caves, observe the life of the famous human fish in Vivarium, visit the interactive exhibition EXPO presenting Slovenian Karst phenomenon, and discover the story of the mysterious Predjama castle.

Most of the guests come from Italy, with their numbers increasing by 13 % in 2016, which is also due to Slovenia's presentation at the world exhibition EXPO Milano 2015. The second and the third largest groups of visitors come from South Korea (55,000) and Germany (50,000). The number of Slovenian guests have increased by 24 % compared to 2015. Are you ready to discover the underground beauties of Slovenia? See you in the Karst!
