At this year’s Bled Strategic Forum (BSF), which took place in Bled on 5th and 6th September, the Minister of Economic Development and Technology, Zdravko Počivalšek, hosted Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), and Gerald Lawless, Chairman of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). At the event, the Slovenian Prime Minister, Miro Cerar, joined other world leaders in a campaign called “Global Leaders for Travel & Tourism,” emphasising the importance of the travel and tourism sector for the economic development of Slovenia.

Taleb Rifai, the Secretary-General of UNWTO, was the keynote speaker at the tourism panel and discussed the topic of “Safety and Sustainability in Tourism.” By visiting Slovenia, Taleb Rifai and Gerald Lawless, Chairman of the WTTC brought significant recognition to our green, active and healthy country. They handed an Open Letter to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Miro Cerar, which was drafted within the scope of a global campaign called “Global Leaders for Travel & Tourism.” So far leaders from more than 80 countries have joined the campaign.

The Open Letter also symbolises the Slovenian contribution to the joint efforts of UNWTO and WTTC in placing travel and tourism higher on the global agenda. In 2011, the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) joined forces to achieve the common goal of placing travel and tourism at the forefront of the global agenda by carrying out the “Global Leaders for Travel and Tourism” campaign.
