All 194-member states of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) announced their support for Slovenia`s bid to declare 20th May World Honeybee Day at a session of the FAO`s Agriculture Committee in Rome.

At the meeting the Slovenian Minister for Agriculture, Dejan Židan, presented several aspects of the initiative, including the economic, social and environmental issues, and expressed the belief that the initiative could connect all countries in the world. "Slovenia is very close to becoming a superpower in this respect. Beekeeping and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle are advantages recognised by our partners all over the world,” he commented on the occasion.

Slovenia, specifically the Slovenian Beekeepers` Association, has already presented the initiative to declare a World Bee Day to the United Nations. The Association would like to mark the day on 20th May, which is the birthday of Anton Janša. With the support of all the major international organisations, we could be celebrating the first World Bee Day on 20th May 2018.

This is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of bees and bee products at the international level. Slovenia is famous for its history of apiculture and painted beehive panels, excellent apitourism capacity and educational presentations of bees in apicultural museums.
