sLOVEnia GREEN: Active farm holidays

Slovenias countryside is the area with the most potential for tourism. The quality of the landscape, natural heritage and the presence of cultural heritage are all important factors in tourism. Slovenia`s countryside is the area with the most potential for tourism. The quality of the landscape, natural heritage and the presence of cultural heritage are all important factors in tourism. Slovenia is rich in all these, and the best way to enjoy a genuine experience of the Slovenian countryside is to visit one of the many farm tourism establishments located throughout the country.

A farm holiday is not the same thing as a beach holiday or a stay at a spa. It is different – you are in close contact with nature and people, their culture, wisdom and traditions, and you return home full of unforgettable impressions.

An increasing number of farms in Slovenia are opting to develop specialised services in order to meet visitors` holiday requirements. Experts from various fields have drawn up compulsory conditions and selection criteria that must be met by farms wishing to obtain the `specialised farm` symbol. An organic holiday farm offers guests a healthy living environment and organic food, for which it holds a certificate from the authorised control body.

Farm tourism is becoming a supplementary activity on many farms in Slovenia, particularly small ones. Several forms of farm tourism are possible, from full board to arrangements where guests are more independent. Some farms even allow guests to join in with the work of the farm.

Wine-producing areas are known for osmice, "eight-day wine shops" where locals sell wine at specific times of year and also offer a selection of local cold dishes. Where farms offer a full range of services, this is a form of farm tourism that does not only mean food and accommodation but the active experiencing of the natural and cultural environment in which the guests spend their free time, or their holiday.
