Ptuj – The treasure house of the millennia

The town of Ptuj is one of the most attractive inland tourist destinations in Slovenia. Along with the rest of the Lower Podravje region, it is an attractive, unique and enormously varied tourist destination. Ptuj and its surrounding area offer thousands of years of and tradition, the opportunity to enjoy a great variety of local specialities, a uniquely romantic atmosphere and a wealth of opportunities for health and well-being – all in one place.

Ptuj is rightly known as the treasure house of the millennia, since it is officially the oldest town in Slovenia. Wherever you are in the town, heritage is the backdrop: a medieval town centre preserved almost in its entirety (the only one in the country), the castle above it, with the Museum collections it contains, the vaulted wine cellars below it, and tens of thousands of archaeological finds, among which the ancient temples of Mithra are some of the most notable. Every patch of soil in Ptuj yields up evidence of the existence of civilisation on the banks of the Drava dating back thousands of years.

In recent years, thanks to several major investments and the development of the tourism sector, the town has become one of the most interesting tourist destinations, not only in Slovenia but even in the wider area as well. The historical attractions that form the basis of tourism in the area are enhanced by new elements including modern, high-quality hotel accommodation, an attractive 18-hole golf course, new wellness facilities, wine bars in the town and wineries in the surrounding area, recently refurbished restaurants, museums, and a programme of festivals and cultural and sports events that was revised and relaunched in 2009.

The nearby Terme Ptuj spa offers Ancient Roman-style holidays with accommodation at the Grand Hotel Primus, named after the Roman general Marcus Antonius Primus, the commander of the Pannonian legions, who was the first person to carry the name of Ptuj out into the world. The rich Roman past can be sensed at every step in the Grand Hotel Primus, since the image and atmosphere of the hotel, along with the exclusive services and facilities on offer, are all marked by Ancient Rome.
