Marking the international year of biodiversity, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has published on its website inspiring stories about biodiversity from around the world. These include the story of the outstanding international festival of Alpine flowers held in Bohinj.

To mark this year’s international year of biodiversity, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is seeking to highlight how sustainable tourist services can contribute to preserving biodiversity. To this end, this year UNWTO has published on its website a call entitled “Inspiring story on biodiversity”, which calls on different organisations to send in their own specific story/project/idea, which will serve to bolster the principles of sustainable tourism in the field of biodiversity. Examples of good practices collected in this way will serve as models in the further development of tourism, and will also show in some way how a specific tourist community contributes to preserving biodiversity for future generations.

The Turizem Bohinj organisation responded to the call with its story about the International Wild Flower Festival. The extraordinary wealth of flora in the wider area of Bohinj has long aroused the interest of botanical experts and the admiration of those who love nature and its beauty.
The international Alpine flower festival has been held since 2007. The festival lasts two weeks and celebrates the culture, nature and landscape of Bohinj, which is economically, socially and environmentally a very sensitive area of Slovenia. Numerous events taking place in a number of locations and venues relate to the three themes of the festival: Alpine flowers in art, Alpine flowers at home and Alpine flowers in science.

This year the project also received important financial support from the Principality of Monaco. In the future the festival organisers want to design sustainable tourism products associated with the natural and cultural heritage of Bohinj and the Triglav National Park and to raise awareness among festival-goers and local people of the importance and advantages of Bohinj’s unique natural features.
