In December, when the Christmas lights are switched on, the centre of Ljubljana is wonderfully vibrant. The streets host a festive fair and countless other free events. The festivities culminate in a New Years Eve celebration held in two central squares and a fireworks display announcing the beginning of the new year.

Festive Fair

Throughout the Advent season, festively decorated market stalls will be offering all kinds of Christmas gifts. Mulled wine and aromatic tea will be served along with culinary delights typical of the festive season.
St Nicholas Fair
3.12. – 12.12.2010
The decorated stalls of the St Nicholas Fair will be selling gift items traditionally given as St Nicholas gifts in Slovenia.
St Nicholas Procession

On his way through the Old Town, St Nicholas will be accompanied by a procession of angels and devils who distribute biscuits, fruits and sweets to children.
Christmas Concert

The annual free Christmas Concert will once again offer an opportunity to enjoy performances by top Slovene musicians amidst the festive atmosphere of a beautifully decorated Ljubljana.
Grandpa Frost processions

A few days before New Year`s Eve, Grandpa Frost (the Slovene counterpart of Santa Claus) will arrive in Ljubljana, accompanied by horsemen on white Lipizzaner horses, snowmen, rabbits and other fairytale creatures.
Prešeren Square children`s events

In the afternoons before New Year`s Eve, the Prešeren Square will be a particular attraction for families with young children. The programme of events will include puppets, dancing, circus acts and magic shows. Also attended by Grandpa Frost and his procession.
Musical events in city squares

Three of Ljubljana`s squares, Prešeren Square, Pogačar Square and Town Square (Mestni trg), will host festive musical concerts featuring pop artists.
New Year`s Eve celebrations in city centre squares

The programme of New Year`s Eve celebrations in city centre squares is designed for people of all ages and tastes. A minute after midnight, a fireworks display will light up the sky above Ljubljana and announce the start of the New Year.
