Kranjska Gora to host the 50th Vitranc Cup on 5 and 6 March

As a ski centre, Kranjska Gora’s greatest fame has undoubtedly come from hosting the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Each winter the world’s best slalom and giant slalom skiers vie with each other on the competition slopes below Vitranc. As a ski centre, Kranjska Gora’s greatest fame has undoubtedly come from hosting the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Each winter the world’s best slalom and giant slalom skiers vie with each other on the competition slopes below Vitranc. This year will be the 50th Vitranc Cup, and it will take place from 5 to 6 March 2011.

The Vitranc Cup is the annual skiing competition for the best male skiers in the world, and has been held since 1961 at the Kranjska Gora ski centre of Podkoren. The Vitranc Cup ranks among what are called the classical, traditional events, which are on the post-New Year calendar of competitions each year for the World Cup. The event traditionally lasts for two days, and involves competition in two disciplines. First there is the Saturday giant slalom and then the Sunday slalom.

Alongside the skiing competition, visitors are also treated to concerts and animations as part of the X-Plosion of Fun event, featuring world-famous music groups that bring a special pulse to this Alpine centre. It will take place on the main stage in the centre of Kranjska Gora on Saturday, 6 March 2011, starting at 6 pm.

At last autumn’s meeting of the International Ski Federation in Zurich, the rough calendar of competitions was confirmed up to and including the 2014/15 season, and Kranjska Gora features in all five years of the calendar, which is of course major recognition for Kranjska Gora and the Vitranc Cup for its years of successfully building on the competition, and its successful hosting of World Cup competitions. “Kranjska Gora is one of the classic competitions, and is part of the fixed repertoire of the World Cup. The same is true of Maribor and the Zlata lisica (Golden Fox) women’s competition," said Srečko Medven, long-time secretary-general of the Vitranc Cup organising committee.

The last Vitranc Cup was held in January, owing to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, but it will revert to its usual time of the first or second weekend in March.
