Kobarid’s Kamp Koren receives gold Alan Rogers prize

At the beginning of the year Alan Rogers, one of the most highly acclaimed European camping guidebooks, named Kamp Koren of Kobarid as the 2010 European winner for accommodation facilities. This popular Kobarid campsite, situated in the unspoilt nature of Triglav National Park right by the emerald River Soča, also received a number of other awards in the past year.

The Alan Rogers website provided the following reasons for the selection of the winner in the accommodation category: "Superbly run by its owner, Lidija Koren, this peaceful, well shaded site is located above the Soča river gorge in the countryside close to Kobarid. A small site with 90 pitches, it is deservedly very popular with those interested in outdoor sports, including hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, canoeing, canyoning, rafting and fishing. At the same time, its quiet location makes it a good site for those seeking a relaxing break. Six attractive, well equipped chalets are a recent addition (2009). The Julian Alps and in particular the Triglav National Park is a wonderful and under-explored part of Slovenia that has much to offer."

In addition to this prestigious prize, in 2010 Lidija Koren of Kamp Koren notched up several other fine achievements and awards. In the tourist guide Cool Camping Europe, Kamp Koren was ranked among the 20 best destinations for lovers of nature, tents and camping in Europe. The biggest European guidebook, ADAC, added the campsite to its list of recommended camps, and awarded a 2010 prize to the team for an accommodation unit, while in December 2010 Kamp Koren secured a spot among the top 20 on the Rentocamp website.

Kamp Koren in Kobarid is situated right by the River Soča, just before the famous Napoleon Bridge, and is surrounded by the Soča canyon and the Kozjak falls. It is most popular among kayakers, paragliders, hikers and families, with as much as 95 per cent of guests coming from abroad. The picturesque old town of Kobarid, just a pleasant walk away, adds a special charm to the location, which offers a multitude of active holiday possibilities. The biggest mark was left on Kobarid by the First World War, with its fascinating tales of the Soča Front, which are recollected vividly in the Kobarid Museum. In Slovenia, Kobarid is also regarded as a place that can boast the highest number of outstanding restaurants in one single town, associated in the unique Kobarid Culinary Circle programme, which in one culinary experience combines a visit to five top restaurants.
