A trip from the coast to explore the inland Istria and Karst

Behind the Slovenian coast the unique Karst region begins. In the cellars of the stone houses you will be offered to taste and be able to buy excellent wines; the attics, however, are rooms where pršut is dried in the burja wind. This is the right place for those who admire the Karst subterranean world and the Karst cultural heritage! Here are some tips for half- or full-day tours.

The Postojna Cave is a network of 27 kilometres of dripstone tunnels, galleries and halls, into which experienced guides have led more than 30 million visitors over the past 185 years. Some sections of the cave may be visited on an electric cave train and the experienced guides will take you to see the remaining parts of the underground world. A good tip for a refreshing half-day tour!

The Lipica Stud Farm is not only one of the oldest stud farms in the world and a cradle of the Lipizzaner horse but also an indispensable Slovenian and world cultural heritage site. A local guide will take visitors on a guided tour through the stables, watching the training of classical riding school and their elegant performances in the art of dressage. Another tip for a half-day or even a full-day tour in combination with a tour of the Postojna cave!

Škocjan caves with their immense halls and underground gorge have a special place among more than seven thousand caves in Slovenia. Owing to their unique natural and cultural heritage the caves were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. The site is located in the Karst region from where the term karst spread around the world. In the caves, visitors can admire giant stalactites and stalagmites of various shapes, rock draperies and large concretion basins. Another tip for a full-day tour!

Other than visiting the nearby destinations, you can also take a trip to Ljubljana (just over an hour’s drive), Bled and Bohinj (just over two hour’s drive from the coast). A number of boat excursions are available as well, with the trip to Venice on board the Prince of Venice catamaran certainly being one of the most attractive excursions.
