Experience wine spring in Bela Krajina

Welcome to the land of Green George, who brings spring to Slovenia. It is not a coincidence that the traditional St. George festival known as "jurjevanje" is held precisely in Bela krajina, the place of Mithra’s age-old faith in the power of the sun. The people here are cheerful and friendly, and many a home gives off delicious scents of "belokranjska pogača", a traditional flatbread, which is protected at the European level. Where the sun is shining, bread is baking, as the Slovenian saying goes. And wine is flowing, one could add. The favourable climate and hardworking winegrowers contribute to a good harvest. Apart from traditional varieties such as the red Metliška Črnina wine, this is the home of excellent rosés and late harvest wines. Feel Bela krajina, where the local tourist centres have prepared very special tours for you.

To warm up and for fun, you will be stopped by “customs officers” of the independent Bela krajina territory. From them you can obtain a “passport” that entitles you to a number of discounts from the local providers. Experience Soseska zidanica (Neighbourhood Wine Cellar), a communal wine cellar that has been operating for over 250 years now! Stroll among vineyards and renowned wineries and taste homemade delicacies just the way Peter Klepec, the supernaturally strong Slovenian folk hero, would like them. Find out about the traditional technique of linen weaving and about the painted Bela krajina Easter eggs, which are adorned with wax. They are among the most beautiful Easter eggs in Europe. Would you like to learn how to make traditional Bela krajina flatbread? Would you like to meet the multiple winner of the Slovenian winegrower of the year award, Mr Jožef Prus?

Feel the world of the Kolpa Landscape Park! Did you know that the green, 133-kilometre long River Kolpa is one of the cleanest and warmest rivers hereabouts? Jump in!
