Ljubljana is gaining recognition on the map of Europe through the central Slovenian running event, the Ljubljana marathon, which happens on the streets of the Slovenian capital. On 23rd October, at least 13,000 runners (that was the number last year) will attend this year`s marathon (42 kilometres) or half-marathon (21 kilometres). An increasing number of foreign runners, who also get to know Ljubljana and Slovenia through the event, will participate.

13,099 marathon runners attended the 10, 21 or 42-kilometer race in the largest and main Ljubljana sports event last year, which gave Ljubljana a special pulse. The majority (12,165) were from Slovenia, while the remaining thousand arrived from 52 countries, including runners from Croatia, Italy, Serbia and Austria.

The public institute `Ljubljana Tourism` claims that the event is starting to become a tourist challenge, although to a smaller extent and a shorter tradition in comparison with the Berlin marathon. Runners from abroad usually spend an extended weekend in Ljubljana, while also visiting, besides the Slovenian capital, the Postojna cave, Bled and the Slovenian coast; most of them return from neighbouring countries.

Tourism Ljubljana presents the marathon as the largest sporting event in Slovenia as well as in all fairs and markets abroad, since the event, according to the extraordinary positive trends of such events, presents an attractive manner of positioning the country and city in a very clear target segment. Such events are also becoming more attractive due to their financial effects for the city.

All information on the Ljubljana marathon is available here – on the official website of the event, where all information for press accreditation and application of participants is available.
