In Slovenia, inns have participated in creating the shape of gastronomic culture and are important centres of social life, for enjoying a good meal and excellent wine. They are places to hold meetings, receptions or celebrations. With the aim of increasing the recognisability of Slovenian gastronomy, the Chamber of Craft and Small Business of Slovenia links the most quality culinary offer of inns in Slovenia under the new “Gostilna Slovenia” brand.

The basic purpose of awarding the collective “Gostilna Slovenija” brand is to connect the highest quality culinary offer of inns in Slovenia, which represent holders of the culinary cultural heritage and its use in contemporary culinary offer. With this uniform brand, Slovenia has started on the path of consistent culinary recognisability and now participates in creating the basis of culinary recognisability and its promotion.

One of the criteria for obtaining the brand is that a hospitality enterprise be called an inn, or sometimes a guesthouse. Thus far, 28 inns have been positively assessed and will be awarded the right to use the “Gostilna Slovenija” brand in the days that follow, and several more are in the assessment process – they will be marked with a sign on the exterior and at the entrance.

There are several criteria for awarding the right to use the “Gostilna Slovenia” brand. The menu has to include at least 80 percent of house, local, regional and Slovenian dishes. The offer of food has to include at least three products with the protected appellation of origin, at least 50 percent of all foodstuffs of local, regional and Slovenian origin, at least 5 percent of used foodstuffs produced ecologically, and seasonal coordination of food production. The criteria also determine that the offer of wine has to be based on the wines of Slovenian winemakers (at least 75 percent), the offer of spirits has to contain at least 5 beverages of local, regional or Slovenian origin, and the offer of non-alcoholic beverages has to include at least 10 such beverages. The exterior design, the interior ambience and the musical atmosphere are also important.

The assessment commission will supervise the provision of offer by visiting the inn owners throughout the year and assessing their commitment to meeting the conditions for the title. In the future, inns located abroad will also be able to join the Slovenian inns that hold the prestigious title.
