In February 2012 7% more foreign overnight stays

Compared to February 2011, in February 2012 1% more tourist arrivals and 1% more overnight stays were registered in tourist accommodations in Slovenia. The number of overnight stays of domestic tourists decreased by 2% and of foreign tourists increased by 7%. In the first two months of this year the number of tourist arrivals is up by 2% and the number of overnight stays also up by 1% over the same period of 2011.

The Italians, the Austrians, the Croats and the Serbians created a little more than a half of all foreign overnight stays

Overnight stays of foreign tourists represented 40% of all overnight stays in February 2012. The highest shares were contributed by tourists from Italy (19%), Austria (13%), Croatia (12%) and Serbia (8%), followed by tourists from Hungary, the United Kingdom and Germany.

Compared to February 2011, in February 2012 tourists from the Russian Federation created 24% more overnight stays, tourists from Germany 22% more, tourists from Serbia 17% more, tourists from Croatia 8% more and tourists from Austria 1% more; higher numbers were also recorded for tourists from some other countries. At the annual level the number of overnight stays of tourists from Bosnia and Herzegovina decreased by 7% and of tourists from Italy by 3%.

A large increase in the number of tourist overnight stays in the capital city

In February 2012, the number of tourist arrivals was the highest in health (spa) resorts (35%); these resorts also recorded the highest number of overnight stays, 40% or 3% more than in February 2011. Iztok Altbauer, the Director of the Community of Slovenian Nature Spas: `The monitoring of statistical data in Slovenian nature spas follows the forecasts that were provided in the marketing plan for 2012 – namely, a slight decrease of the domestic market and constant growth of the foreign market. Considering the positive trends of guests from Austria, Croatia and Russia, we can only be worried about a considerate decline of overnight stays by Italian guests; namely, the effects of a difficult economic situation in our most important neighbouring country are already noticeable.`

Second placed were mountain resorts, where 29% of all tourist overnight stays were recorded, which is 3% more than in February 2011. In the same comparison seaside resorts (11% of all tourist overnight stays) recorded a 14% annual decrease in overnight stays. The capital city Ljubljana, with a 6% share of all tourist overnight stays, recorded the highest (15%) increase in the number of tourist overnight stays.

Hotels recorded two thirds of all overnight stays or 2% more than in the same period of previous year

In February 2012, most (68% of all) overnight stays were registered in hotels, followed by holiday dwellings (10% of all overnight stays).

Compared to February 2011, in February 2012 the number of overnight stays increased the most in tourist farms with accommodation (by 37%); in youth hostels it increased by 12% and in hotels by 8%, while in holiday dwellings it decreased by 3%.

From January to February of 2012, 2% more tourist arrivals were registered in tourist accommodations compared to the same period of the previous year. In the same comparison the number of overnight stays increased by 1%. In the first two months of this year the number of arrivals of domestic tourists decreased by 2% over the same period of the previous year and the number of their overnight stays by 1%. Over the same period of the previous year there were more arrivals of foreign tourists (by 5%) as well as their overnight stays (by 3%).
