Slovenia as a part of the EDEN Network

Among the many different aims of the EDEN initiative, one is to create a platform for the exchange of good practices in the field of sustainable tourism at a European level and to promote networking between awarded destinations. Every year the new winners are invited to join. In total, 98 destinations of the EDEN awarded destinations in 26 participating countries were selected and awarded in the period 2007-2011. All of them are members of the EDEN Network.

Europe is the world`s favourite tourist hotspot, enjoying over 40% of the global market share. EDEN is a flagship initiative from the European Commission, which works to maintain Europe`s position as the world leader in tourism and to uphold its reputation for social responsibility and sustainability. EDEN destinations have become a significant presence in today`s highly competitive tourism sector. To learn more about your favourite EDEN destination, visit the EDEN website.

All awarded destinations sign a memorandum of understanding, the ‘Declaration on the European Network of Destinations of Excellence for Sustainable Tourism’. This is an official commitment by members to work together and to share information on sustainable tourism across the network. With the support of the European Commission, the network aspires to be an influential voice and an important contributor in promoting Europe as a leader in sustainable, high-quality tourism.

On 10 January 2012, the majority of the EDEN Network members established an international non-profit organisation, the EDEN Network Association – the AISBL (“EDEN Association”). The membership of the EDEN Association will also be extended to the 4 runners-up of each participating country in each of the previous five EDEN editions in 2007-2011, which could bring a critical mass of 300-400 destinations to the EDEN Association.

One of the main goals of the EDEN Association is to facilitate international marketing activities by giving all the destinations a more effective platform to showcase their “experiences”. To this end, a new website is under preparation, and contacts regarding the setting-up of permanent partnerships with international organizations involved in sustainable tourism market activities have taken place.
