Solčavsko – discovery of life as it once was

The Logarska valley is definitely one of the most recognisable images of Slovenia and, at the same time, one of Europe’s most beautiful glacial alpine valleys. Are you a lover of relaxed walks offering views of Alpine peaks, while the hundred-year-old coexistence of people and nature calms you down? Do you prefer more active cycling and hiking discoveries? Logarska dolina is an excellent starting point for hiking to the peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and for diverse cycling discoveries.

In 2009, Solčavsko received the European Destination of Excellence title on the theme tourism and protected areas. The area, called the harmony of three valleys, is composed of three valleys: the most famous one is the Logarska valley, followed by Matkov kot and Robanov kot. The two landscape parks Robanov kot and Logarska dolina, sustainable forests, protected areas in the Natura 2000 European network and picturesque landcapes bear witness to the strong connection of the locals with nature through the centuries. Furthermore, farms that have created a cultural landscape through the centuries (many of them are still, nowadays, self-sufficient) have also left a mark on the area.

The TIC Solčava – Center Rinka has prepared diverse active programmes, while programmes are also available for families with children, for individuals or for couples. You can hire an experienced guide, a bicycle or other equipment. During the hiking and cycling trips you will become familiar with the pulse of life, the tradition and the local cuisine in this area. Moreover, programmes will be adapted to your wishes or supplemented with hints on where you can head on your own.

We have gathered some tips for an active vacation:

- We suggest that you start your discovery in the multipurpose center for sustainable development of Solčavsko – Rinka that represents a center and entry point into Solčavsko. Here, you will have the opportunity to attend an exhibition and multimedia presentation that will help you get to know Solčavsko from the other side; then, go on to taste local products.
- Head for the Solčavsko panoramic path – you can walk or cycle! The path runs under the slopes of the Olševa mountain. There are beautiful views along the path to the Logarska valley and Matkov kot, another valley of the three glacier valleys. A typical feature of the panoramic road is that the farms in the area are located in the highest areas in Slovenia and are also some of the largest, according to surface area, in the Alpine world.
- You can visit the Potočka Zijalka museum and see the oldest needle in the world – from the times of cavemen; moreover, the museum presents, besides information about the history of Potočka Zijalka, the dwelling of the cave bears and our ancestors, the story of the Savinja river gorge that, 100 years ago, prevented simple access to the valley. It is because of this gorge that the valley has been preserved in all its natural and cultural originality.
- You can also enjoy a wool-making demonstration and a presentation of the autochthonous breed of Jezersko-Solčavsko sheep.
- You can head to the two famous waterfalls – Palent and Rinka.
- Another idea is to visit the Fairytale forest in Logarska valley, where world-famous and Slovenian fairytales and local tales are presented along the wooden houses in the forest.
- You can also visit a mountain farm and become familiarised with life above 1000 metres – life as it once was. The Klemenšek farm also contains an ethnological collection of old tools.
- Before the Logarska Valley, by the Firšt museum and inn, the very interesting Fidov gaj opened in June; it includes ethnographic objects and paths that lead through the stories that happened 100 years ago. All paths lead to the underground cave – `Fidova zijalka` cave, where an unusual man lived for ten years, a local healer and scholar, Vid Strgar – Fida.
- Do not overlook: The “bicka” sheep`s wool festival (around 20 September 2012): Presentation on the indigenous breed of sheep called jezersko-solčavska, a demonstration of sheep shearing and wool processing, a workshop for the manufacture of felt products, a fashion show featuring wool clothing, traditional mountain pasture cooking, a cultural and musical programme, etc.
