Bristol, Brussels, Glasgow and Ljubljana have been selected as finalists to advance to the next selection phase for the green capital of Europe in 2015 organised by the European Commission. The award for the green capital of Europe is annually awarded to a town that stands out due to its environmentally friendly attitude.

Bristol, Brussels, Glasgow and Ljubljana will now prepare to present their vision, communication strategy and their potential to become a role model to other towns. The presentations will take place in Brussels on 24 May. The final decision of the committee regarding which town will receive the title of green capital of Europe in 2015 will be announced on 14 June 2013 in France at the official award presentation hosted by the current green capital of Europe, Nantes.

So far, five towns have received the award for the green capital of Europe: Stockholm in 2010, Hamburg in 2011, Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2012, Nantes in 2013 and Ko;benhavn in 2014. The award is given to a town that excels with its environmentally friendly city lifestyle. Initially, the expert committee evaluates the town according to 12 environmental criteria, followed by an evaluation of the jury with regard to the achievement of high environmental standards in towns, their commitment to sustainable and ambitious objectives for the further improvement of the care for environment and sustainable development and how these towns can work as a role model to other towns and encourage the best practice in other European towns.
