Slovenia’s tourism was doing well in February 2013

There were 5% more tourist arrivals and 1% more tourist overnight stays registered in tourist accommodations in February 2013 than in February 2012. In the same comparison, arrivals of domestic tourists increased by 5%, while their overnight stays decreased by 1%. The number of foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays both increased by 4%.

As regards the most important tourism markets, the highest increases in overnight stays were by Russian and British tourists.

In February 2013, foreign tourists made up 41% of tourist overnight stays in Slovenia. Key European markets, from which the most overnight stays by foreign tourists in Slovenia were recorded, were Italy (18% of all foreign overnight stays), Austria and Croatia (13% each), the United Kingdom, Serbia and Hungary (7% each), Germany (6%) and the Russian Federation (5%).

As regards the important tourism markets, in February 2013, tourists from the Russian Federation created 53% more overnight stays over February 2012, tourists from the United Kingdom 12% more, from Croatia 8% more, from Hungary 5% more, from Austria 3% more and from Italy 1% more. In the same comparison, tourists from Germany had 1% fewer overnight stays and from Serbia 9% fewer overnight stays.

Ever more tourists come to Slovenia from overseas markets

Among distant, overseas markets, tourists from the United States, Canada, Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and other Asian countries contributed to 4% of all foreign overnight stays. Compared to February 2012, in February 2013 there were 14% more overnight stays by tourists from China, 24% more from the United States and 50% more from Canada. On the other hand, the number of overnight stays by Japanese tourists declined by 15%.

In mountain and seaside resorts, more tourist arrivals and overnight stays, while in health (spa) resorts, fewer

Most tourists in February 2013 visited and stayed overnight in health (spa) resorts; 38% of all tourist overnight stays were recorded in these resorts. These resorts were followed by mountain resorts with a 31% share, seaside resorts with a 12% share and urban municipalities with an 8% share. The Municipality of Ljubljana recorded 6% of all tourist overnight stays.

Seaside resorts recorded the highest increase in overnight stays (14%) in the reference period compared to a year ago. An increase in the number of overnight stays was also noticed in mountain resorts (by 4%) and in urban municipalities (by 6%). The Municipality of Ljubljana recorded approximately the same number of overnight stays, while health (spa) resorts recorded a decrease of 6%.

A significant increase in overnight stays in tourist farms, youth hostels and private accommodations

In February 2013, most tourist arrivals and overnight stays were recorded in hotels, 69% and 67%, respectively, followed by apartment settlements (9% of all overnight stays) and private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (5% of all overnight stays).

Compared to February 2012, in February 2013 a significant increase in the number of tourist overnight stays was recorded in youth hostels (by 29%), in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (by 49%) and in tourist farms with accommodation (by 17%). Mountain huts also recorded 2% more overnight stays. In the same period, hotels recorded 1% fewer overnight stays. The same applies for apartment settlements, which registered a 9% decrease in the number of overnight stays, and camping sites with a 4% decrease.

This year foreign tourist arrivals in total down by 5% and overnight stays also down by 5% over the same period of 2012 (January and February)

In the first two months of this year, 3% fewer tourist arrivals were registered in tourist accommodations than in the same period of the previous year. In the same comparison, the number of tourist overnight stays decreased by 5%.

In the reference period, fewer tourist arrivals and overnight stays by both types of tourists were recorded: domestic tourists created 1% fewer arrivals and 5% fewer overnight stays over the same period of the previous year, while the number of foreign tourist arrivals and overnight stays both decreased by 5%.
