The Pivka intermittent lakes are now also in a museum

During the World Tourism Day, the new Ecomuseum of the Pivka Intermittent Lakes opened its doors in Slovenska vas pri Pivki. In a modern setting, the museum presents the phenomenon of intermittent lakes in the area of Slovenian Karst. By the end of the year, the Pivka Municipality will also prepare an ordinance on establishing a landscape park with this name.

The Pivka intermittent lakes are not widely known to the public – another Slovenian intermittent lake – Lake Cerknica – is better known; this lake changes its image from a dry field to the largest lake surface in Slovenia (and largest intermittent lake in Europe).

The Pivka basin along the branched Pivka River, which used to hold 37 mills, is full of natural Karst phenomena – there are numerous springs on the surface that fill the lower-positioned smaller and larger Karst hollows, forming 17 intermittent lakes that are interesting and continue to change throughout the seasons.

During the dry period, the area is a vast grassy carpet, while when filled with water, the lakes have a mysterious charm; moreover, during winter the lakes freeze and provide a magical winter atmosphere. With the opening of the museum, this magic will definitely become known to new visitors.
