Winter joys from Bled to Bohinj

Lonely Planet says the following: many visitors of Slovenia say that there is no lake more beautiful than Lake Bled. Until they discover Lake Bohinj only 26 kilometres away. But let`s leave the good old Gorenjska rivalry aside, since both lakes will captivate your eyes and heart. Bled is well known abroad and has the only island in Slovenia. The most famous Slovenian postcard is an image of Bled Island with the Feast of the Assumption Church in the midst of the emerald lake under the Alpine peaks.

Lake Bohinj is the largest natural lake in Slovenia. The largest rarely also means the most beautiful. Except in Slovenia. Bohinj is exciting with its primal image, green-blue shades of the water, waterfalls, rivers, mountains and forests that turn white in the winter. More than half of Lake Bohinj lies in Triglav National Park, one of the oldest such parks in Europe. Four Bohinj ski centres invite you to experience pleasures on snow. The most famous are the Vogel Ski Center and the Pokljuka Sports Centre.

Vogel is famous for its incredible views of the Julian Alps and Lake Bohinj. The popular Ski Train drives there during the winter from Ljubljana with included transport to the ski areas, ski card and lunch. The whole season is characterized by benefits – the end of January on Vogel will be dedicated to the eternally young, the first week of March is Ladies Week, followed by free ski for those who will be reserving a package. The full moon hikes to Vogel, on 17 January, 14 February and 15 March are especially romantic. The evening winter landscape and stories of Bohinj in the moonlight and under soft light have true hypnotic power. Even more night adrenaline can be released on the longest sledding run in Slovenia from the Vogar mountain.

On the Pokljuka plateau in the embrace of high spruce trees, there are more than 30 kilometres of cross-country tracks. Everything has been prepared for the 22nd Race of Politicians, Diplomats and Entrepreneurs at the end of January. Then comes the highlight of the year, the Biathlon World Cup from 5 to 9 March 2014. The Slovenian Team, which has been training on Pokljuka, is counting on the world champion, Jakov Fak.

For numerous years, Bohinj has also been a traditional organiser of the telemark skiing World Cup races. This year, the best telemark skiers in the world will come to Bohinj on 24 January. Have you already tried the famous turn with genuflection? This is a non-Olympic discipline, which is basically the first form of skiing. It comes from Norway where they skied with a free heel and fastened only the front part of the ski shoes. Modern telemark requires real masters, since they have to master jumping and running on one giant slalom run. The Bohinj World Cup is also visited by the old-style skiers from Kropa, who are celebrating a more than 300-year-old tradition of Slovenian skiing on wooden skis without edges.
