Planica for sustainable development

Planica is a picturesque Alpine valley on the edge of Triglav National Park with a rich tradition of Nordic skiing. This year`s Ski Jumping and Flying World Cup will be held from 20 to 23 March. Slovenia is also hoping Planica will become the organiser of the World Championship in Nordic disciplines in 2019. Besides the candidacy, the organisers are directing their strength toward the project Planica for Sustainable Development. The first steps of the commitment for sustainable sports events have already been carried out in the area of mobility and food. Only last year, 1,200 people came to Planica by train. A deposit for food packaging was introduced and the supply of local food was increased.

One of the largest ski jumping facilities in the world rises on the tri-border between Slovenia, Austria and Italy. The end of the season of ski jumpers is annually characterized by the largest traditional Slovenian sports event with its accompanying event Open Air Planica. Tens of thousands of sports fans have cheered in the arena of the Bloudek`s ski jumping facility at the setting of more than 60 world ski jumping and flying records.

The members of the Planica organisation committee have undertaken the organisation of the FIS World Cup Ski Jumping and Flying competitions in the spirit of a positive influence on the natural and social environment. They would like to consider the principles of sustainable development, contribute to dynamic balance between man and nature and enable social equality and intergenerational solidarity. Planica`s commitment to sustainability includes environmental, social, cultural and economic responsibility for the current and future generations.

The initiators of the Planica for Sustainable Development project stand for the preservation of natural resources, reduction of waste and all types of pollution, protection of flora and fauna habitats, provision of ethical and health conditions for athletes, visitors, organisers and volunteers, promotion of environmental awareness and education in sustainable development. If Planica succeeds and becomes the organiser of the World Championship in 2019, this would be a big contribution to the promotion of green and sustainable tourism.
