Winter in Slovenia – skiing and much, much more

Centuries ago in Slovenia, people invented a unique way of skiing and ski jumpers flew over 100 metres for the first time already in 1936... Today, this land is still in love with winter challenges and provides them in abundance for all who love an active winter. Slovenia is a popular ski destination and skiing is one of the most popular sports among Slovenians. Choose your winter adventure!

In the small corner of the Alps extending into Slovenia, there stretch a dozen well-regulated ski resorts – in total there are about 80 of which the most recognisable six are Kranjska Gora, Mariborsko Pohorje, Rogla, Krvavec Vogel and Cerkno. The main advantage of Slovenian ski centres is that almost all of them offer direct contact with the valley, and thus other diverse experiences.

And don’t forget, winter in Slovenia is not limited to just skiing! You can discover cross-country ski tracks in fairytale Alpine valleys, challenging toboggan runs on mountain roads covered with snow or torch-lit snowshoeing, snowmobiling, horse-drawn sleighs or even dog-sled rides and other joys of winter. In Slovenia you can also learn a winter sport. In fact, Slovenia is well known for its excellent ski schools!

And some practical tips...

The atmosphere of a real skiing area is provided by the very popular resort of Kranjska Gora, which is a traditional venue of the Alpine Skiing World Cup.

A fabulous image of the lake, the little island and the castle on the overhanging cliff high above the lake is offered by the world-renowned alpine pearl of Bled. Although it is by no means a typical ski resort, it offers various winter experiences.

If you are more into a calm winter atmosphere, Bohinj is just the right place for you with its mysterious winter landscape of the largest Slovenian natural lake. From there you can also set out on numerous active winter adventures.

What about Maribor, the capital of Styria and the second largest city in the country which is nice and small and embedded in the beautiful nature of green or white Mariborsko Pohorje – the venue for the Golden Fox, a round of the Ski World Cup for Women.

On the slopes of Pohorje you can also find Rogla, a cosy family ski centre, connected with an attractive offer of the Terme Zreče Spa Resort at its foothills.

Perhaps a slightly less traditional ski experience is a combination of enjoying yourself in the urban capital of Ljubljana and skiing on the easily accessible ski slope of Krvavec. Where could you experience both the capital and real winter adventures in such a simple way?
