Three “Oscars” for winter tourism in Slovenia

On the 20th anniversary of the World Travel Awards, hailed as the “Oscars of the Travel Industry” and presented every year at the World Travel Market in London, travel professionals from every continent presented the first ever World Ski Awards in the classy Tyrol ski resort of Kitzbühel this year. Among the winners, three were from Slovenia.

With the World Ski Awards, travel professionals wish to provide incentives to raise the quality of ski resorts, including hotel and other services of the ski hospitality sector. This is why awards are not given merely to ski centres and winter resorts for their comprehensive range of services, but also to the best hotels, small-sized hotels with up to 50 beds and the nicest ski chalets in every country.

The initial selection of the leading ski resorts and hotels is made by professionals from travel agencies, tour operators and journalists who choose the nominees for every country and then publish them on a website. This is followed by voting by users who are familiar with the ski resorts. This year the voting process started on 26 August and by the end of it, over a million guests of ski centres around the globe had cast their vote.

As the best ski centre in Slovenia, users have picked Kranjska Gora, which has also received the Travel Oscar for Hotel Larix as the best ski hotel in Slovenia. Hotel Raj on Krvavec has been chosen as the best boutique hotel.

The mayor of Kranjska Gora, Jože Žerjav, has expressed his desire to the organisers of the World Ski Awards to host one of the next award presentation ceremonies in Kranjska Gora, a renowned winter and summer sports resort that has earned its fame by staging the Alpine Ski World Cup, with races taking place at the Podkoren trail since 1961. Every winter the best ski racers in the world compete on the steep slopes under Vitranc in both the slalom and giant slalom events.
