The international success of Brda wines and oils

"I can tell you that the best wines in the world come from Brda", says one of the most famous Slovenian winemakers Stojan Ščurek, in the trailer to the film Terra Magica, which you will be able to see next year. Slovenian winemakers from Brda, a famous wine region, are considered to be one of the best wine producers. In just over two decades, they created success from nothing, says Aleš Kristančič, another famous winemaker. When a few friends, who are now Brda`s largest winemakers, decided to start exporting their own wine around the world, it was a big challenge to compete with the giants of the wine industry.

Nowadays, however, the best restaurants in New York and Tokyo know where Brda is – the land of invigorating moments. Brda recently became famous at the European Winemakers` Soccer Tournament in Switzerland, where the Slovenian team won 4th place. The whole-hearted and ambitious Brda citizens played an important role in the national team.

Local people say that they live in touch with nature and its sweet fruits their whole lives. They are still amazed at the richness of flavour, colour, and aroma hidden in every single drop. Moreover, they believe that big words are unnecessary, as one should taste and experience Brda firsthand. History knows that good wine has been produced in Brda`s hills for several centuries. The grape vine has been brought to the land of invigorating moments as early as in Roman times. The excellent wines from Brda were appreciated already in the Venetian Republic, and later in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

After World War II, the local winemakers were forced to think big – quantity trumped quality. In the 1980s, however, Brda residents started doing things their way, and are now considered world class winemakers. Five friends from Brda are to be thanked for the story of wine-making revival. They were very ambitious and able to think beyond the limits of the Brda region and the national borders. But to achieve their vision, their synergies were crucial. When they started exporting their wines to the USA, Japan, and Australia, buyers started wondering where exactly this wine was produced. Now they all feel Slovenia and the experience of Brda. Brda has The New York Times, LA Times, and even Food & Wine. Brda residents are also proud of their cherry and olive groves. Just last week, Brda held its traditional wedding at the Cherry Festival. Brda olive oil won 14 gold medals at this year`s Mediterranean International Olive Oil Competition "Maslina Split 2014".

The same sun above the hills of Brda warms the grapes, olives, and cherries. The region resembles to the world renowned wine regions, but Brda is different – it is a boutique destination not to overcrowded with tourists. Ščurek, Simšič, Kristančič, Klinec, Erzetič, Benedetič, Kabaj & Morel are all big names in the wine world, who know how to combine poetry and wine. This is what makes the Brda experience more pure, more romantic, and more personal.
