In the Soča valley, the former mayor of Kanal ob Soči Miran Ipavec opened the first Hitchhiker Museum in Slovenia. In the museum, he gathered and presented his memories from his "hitchhiking career". The hitchhiking guru travelled more than 300,000 kilometres in the last 30 years and visited 38 European countries wearing his distinctive white hat. Feel the traveller spirit in Slovenia!

Hitchhiker Museum, the first of its kind in Slovenia, is located in Kanal ob Soči, next to the famous bridge built in 1580 connecting the banks of the emerald green Soča. When he was 25 years old, Miran Ipavec hitchhiked for the first time on his way to Milan to attend the Queen concert. Ever since, he travelled more than 300,000 kilometres and met more than 6,000 drivers. With such a distance he could have travelled around the Earth more than seven and a half times!

In the museum you can find numerous traveller attractions and exhibits that reveal unique stories. One of the key elements is undoubtedly the white hat, the traveller`s trademark, which brought him good luck during his travels and helped him to find many rides. Besides the hat, his mandatory equipment also included a sleeping bag and a map with notes on the names of places, the time of arrival and the amount of time spent hitchhiking. Travellers can also check their geographical knowledge, when the host hands them flags of States and asks them to place them on the postcards of capitals of Europe.

Your visit to the Soča valley can also be enriched with hiking trips. You can walk around or take the popular Kanal – Lig – Korada – Vrtače – Plave – Kanal cycling route. Drive past the bridge in Kanal, visit the Kanal’s old town centre and ascend to Plave. Be inspired by the emerald Soča and interesting travel stories! Feel the green Slovenia!
