Osmica, hospitable farmhouse in the Karst Region

Slovenia is a treasury of many culinary delights. The Karts Region is especially proud of its more than two-hundred-year-old tradition of lively events, which take place in the popular hospitable farmhouses called osmice.

Osmica is a special eight-day-long event during which the wine-growing farmers sell their wine (the surplus wine) and local dishes, such as homemade cured pršut ham, bread baked in the traditional bread oven, gnocchi, potica and other local delights without paying taxes. Each farmer can organise one or two osmica per year. These events originate from the times of Maria Theresa, in the middle of the 18th century, when she allowed the wine-growing farmers to sell their wine and offer homemade treats to the visitors.

Wondering how to find a genuine Slovenian osmica? Look for so-called fraske, which are fixed along the roads to let the visitors know that the farmhouses have opened their doors. Fraske are typical sharp wooden boards decorated with bouquets of ivy, which are turned upside down. Go find them! Here are some tips on where to go to enjoy the eight days of fun.

The events reach their peak from November to June. The green, active and healthy Slovenia is waiting for you!
