On 21 September Bohinj hosts a cow`s ball in the idyllic Ukanc, a traditional event where the residents of Bohinj celebrate the return of cattle and Alpine herdsmen from mountain pastures. Around 10,000 people come out into nature to enjoy this September event, marking the start of an active autumn.

The cow`s ball is the oldest event in Bohinj, which was mostly a local event until the 1950s. Together with Alpine herdsmen and caterers, the locals celebrated the end of tourist and pasture season. At this traditional ethnologic event, held since 1954, the Alpine herdsmen herd the adorned cattle from the lofty Alpine pastures down to the valley. They carry the so-called basenga on their shoulders, a kit including all the necessary tools for cheese making and life on the Alpine pastures.

The residents of Bohinj also give visitors a presentation on mountain life, and those who are interested in Alpine dairy farming can compete in fun sports and traditional games, which hark back to old mountain and rural customs. Visitors can also taste dishes from traditional Bohinj cuisine and dance to lively and entertaining folk music.

Alpine dairy farming traces its beginnings back to the 13th century and at about the same time cheese making got started in the area. This industry became a pillar of agriculture in Bohinj for years, as milk and dairy products have become a staple of everyday nutrition. On 20 September, visitors can also enjoy Bohinj’s Cheese and Wine Festival, where they can taste excellent cheese and dairy products and sip fine wine. More information on the history of Alpine dairy farming is available at the Alpine Dairyman Museum.
