The City of Women Festival in Ljubljana

In October, Ljubljana will be inspired by a cultural atmosphere. Between 2 and 12 October, the International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women will take place. This year`s interdisciplinary festival under the title "Survival Tactics" will highlight the working conditions of artists, who are facing ever harsher conditions for producing their work.

Every year, the International Festival of Contemporary Arts hosts from 40 to 60 female artists and intellectuals from all over the world and attracts more than 6,000 visitors. The Festival is also accompanied by numerous other events, including free workshops and lectures promoting an understanding of cultural identity and contemporary theory and providing a useful cultural lesson.

This year`s anniversary festival will focus on the working conditions of artists (artists, the precariously employed and the self-employed in the world of arts and culture) who are confronted with ever-more harsh conditions of production work. This difficult environment particularly affects the sectors where women make up the majority of the labour force, which in recent years can also be said for Slovenia. You can follow festival events on the festival’s official Facebook page.

In September, the 20th City of Women festival will be held at different venues in Ljubljana. Guest speakers will sit down to a round table, a special film programme is in the works at Slovenska Kinoteka, and a range of numerous other events have also been planned. The 20th City of Women festival will see the participation of the following Slovenian and foreign female artists, theoreticians, and activists: Andreja Kulunčić, Nataša Živković, Neda Rusjan Bric, Larissa Sansour, Raeda Saadeh, Mala Kline, Alexis O`Hara & Stephen Lawson, Mirel Wagner, Marina Gržinić, Ngozi Onwurah, Nevline Nnaji, Silvia Federici, Bryony Kimmings, Liad Land, Elena Molinaro, Ursula Martinez, Saša Rakef, Jasmina Založnik, Lula Pena, Zavoloka & Laetitia Morais, Andrea Miltnerova, Suzie Templeton, Lotta Geffenblad, La Ribot, Emmauelle Bercot, Simona Semenič, and the creators of the Image Snatchers. On the penultimate night of the festival, they will seduce the audience with their bitter-sweet vignettes of distortion, mocking, travesty, and cross-dressing.
