On 28 November at 6 PM every year, the Alpine village of Podkoren near Kranjska Gora hosts the traditional ethnological event commonly associated with St. Nicholas, though its origins date back to the pagan period. At the time, it was believed that in the winter the souls of the dead return to the world.
Striking Krampus masks and clothes are made in the Kanal Valley in neighbouring Italy, in Austrian Carinthia, in Podkoren and near the Upper Sava Valley. In Kranjska Gora, the hiking of Krampuses from the three countries marks the beginning of the winter season.
Many things revolve around the number three in Kranjska Gora, a fact attested by the event Merrily to Kranjska Gora − Festival of Folk music gropus, usually held in the end of October. It is intended for guests from Slovenia as well as from Austria, Germany and Italy and to all those who are fond of popular folk music.
