Countdown to Ski opening in Slovenia

During the winter in Slovenia, there is nothing better than a descent down a white hillside and soaking up the sun in front of an alpine cottage amidst snow covered peaks. Release even more adrenalin and feel the freedom with ski touring through powdery snow or during ice climbing on frozen waterfalls. Last year the Guardian described with some fervour the advantages of a winter holiday in Slovenian ski Resort Vogel above picturesque Bohinj Lake – natural and fresh snow, accommodation close to the ski slopes surrounded by pristine nature, an affordable skiing holiday, excellent ski schools and hospitable locals. The ski season begins soon! This year the new Active Slovenia Ski Pass (ESSV, AS) is a single ski season ticket, which links all the larger Slovenian ski resorts.

Green, active and healthy Slovenia is a diverse alpine country. With the highest number of outstanding achievements in winter sports per capita, it is one of the most successful countries in the world in these sports. Slovenians brought home eight medals from the last Winter Olympic Games! Alpine skiing, Nordic disciplines and snow boarding are close to our hearts and we are also traditional hosts of World Cup competitions. During the winter months Slovenia has an abundance of natural snow. Modern ski centres combined offer more than 300 km of ski runs and 280 km of cross-country trails. Almost every larger town has a ski centre close by. The winter season starts at the beginning of December and usually finishes in April.

The best known ski centres are Krajnska Gora, where from 14 to 15 March 2015 the slopes are reserved for the 54th Vitranc Cup and for the men`s slalom and giant slalom World Cup competition, Mariborsko Pohorje, where on 21 and 22 February 2015 they are preparing for the 51st Golden Fox, the international ski competition for the best women slalom and giant slalom racers, and Rogla, where in the middle of the snow covered forest there are good runs for skiers and cross-country skiers. Winter sports are also at home on Krvavec, which is only 15 minutes away from Ljubljana, on Vogel, Cerkno, Golte, Stari vrh and at more than thirty other smaller ski resorts in the country. The pleasures of winding down the white slopes are added to with the "apres ski" parties and pampering in wellness centres, that you can simply walk to in your ski boots.

For adventurists, who want to experience even closer contact with nature, Slovenia offers excellent opportunities for ski touring. Making your way through pristine powdery snow and the view of the mountain peaks are incredible experiences. In Slovenia you can hire certified guides, who will ensure your safety and show you special spots around Kranjska Gora, Bohinj Lake, Vršič or Pokljuka, where ski touring is the most popular.

Triglav National Park is an excellent starting point for cross-country skiing. Pokljuka, located above Lake Bled, welcomes you with more than 30 km of well maintained cross-country ski trails. The forest rimmed plateau has regularly hosted the Biathlon World Cup and is a popular destination for athletes` physical conditioning. On Zreče Pohorje the Rogla cross-country ski centre offers 7 different polygons, for every type of cross-country skier. Both Pokljuka and Rogla offer accommodation together with a superior culinary experience.

Slovenia is also a country of long ski jumps. Planica, where Slovenia`s best "eagles" are nurtured, is known for its Nordic centre and organisation of the final of the Ski Jumping World Championship. In this year`s competition season this is on the agenda from 19 to 22 March 2015.
