Specialities of Slovenian Farms exhibition in Ptuj

From 21 to 24 May 2015 the Minorite Monastery in Ptuj – the oldest Slovenian town – will be very busy hosting the 26th Specialities of Slovenian Farms national exhibition. A traditional culinary event will be held in the monastery courtyard, featuring performances by singers and folk musicians, and luring the visitors to taste or purchase a wide range of Slovenian delicacies displayed at temping stalls.

The traditional Specialities of Slovenian Farms exhibition is organised under the watchful eye of the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia (CAFS), the Agricultural Advisory Service, the Municipality of Ptuj, and the KGZS Institute Ptuj, and is a major presentation of culinary delights made by the diligent hands of Slovenian farmers. Did you know that in Slovenia there are more than seventy thousand farmsteads engaged in agricultural activity? Not only does the exhibition honour Slovenian products, accompanied by a variety of entertainment programmes, but it also deserves attention for its assessment of agricultural food products with a focus on the quality of products made from fruit, cereals, vegetables, meat products, oil, fruit brandy, wine, spirits, flavoured oil, table olives, and olive oil. Check out the festival to see who will win the most culinary Oscar awards this year.

The monastery courtyard in Ptuj attracts numerous visitors from Slovenia and abroad. Come and join the spring culinary festivity and travel back to the times of folk singers and musicians. Indulge in the wonderful aromas of Slovenian delicacies! While strolling around Ptuj, you may take pleasure in tasting some of the typical dishes from Ptuj, such as Chicken A la Ptuj, Štajerska Sour Soup, Roast Turkey with Homemade Pasta (mlinci), Cucumbers with Potatoes, Black Pudding, Cabbage A la Styria, Buckwheat and corn flour potica (roll cake), Haloze Layer Cake, and Mushroom Soup with Buckwheat Žganci (mash). Enjoy your meal!

The Minorite Monastery in Ptuj is the oldest monastery of the order of the "lesser brothers of Francis" in Slovenia. Historical sources testify that the monastery was established by the Ptuj nobility in 1239. Today, the monastery is the seat of Slovenian Minorite Province of St. Joseph and also features an important cultural and education centre with a private music school in operation there for almost a decade. In addition to Specialities of Slovenian Farms exhibition, the former refectory dining room and monastery courtyard host a number of concerts and other events throughout the year.
