Introduction of the first Slovene regions at Expo Milano

In May, the Coastal-Karst and Goriška regions as well as the Slovenian minority in Italy will make presentations of their beautiful sites and features at Expo 2015. On 21 and 22 March, the Expo Gate event will be a major promotional opportunity for Green Slovenia. Slovenia will present itself to the general Italian public with a varied programme and a press conference for Slovenian and Italian media as one of 12 countries out of 53 that have their own pavilions at Expo Milano. Come and be filled with inspiration to visit Slovenia!

By participating in Expo Gate, taking place within the framework of Expo 2015, green Slovenia was given an excellent opportunity to present itself to the general Italian public. Join the press conference for Slovenian and Italian media, which will also be attended by Zdravko Počivalšek, Minister of Economic Development and Technology of the Republic of Slovenia. In the centre of Milan at the “Expo Gate Pyramid” venue, eight Slovenian regions will acquaint visitors with the extraordinary tourist, cultural and oeno-gastronomic diversity of this country located between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea through various cultural events, cooking shows, traditional music rhythms and exquisite culinary offerings.

Slovenia is a land of many contrasts, a broad range of terrain and a wide selection of natural treasures. Come and get to know it better at the world gathering in Milan. The first region to inspire you is the Coast and the Karst region which will be presented in the first half of May. The Adriatic coast invites you to visit picturesque Mediterranean towns such as Koper, which developed from the former Goat Island into the economic centre of Slovenian Istria, picturesque medieval Piran with its spectacular sceneries right out of a movie and Izola, marked by its fishing tradition, or more sophisticated Portorož, with its marina and numerous casinos. Stroll around the Karst landscape, among the olive groves, vineyards and orchards. Below their roots lie some of the most beautiful underground worlds of our planet; there are around 10000 karst caves and sinkholes in the Coastal-Karst region. The Škocjan Caves, under UNESCO world heritage protection, boast the 1400-meter long and 150-meter deep underground canyon of the Reka River. There is also the famous Strunjan Cliff at 80 m above the sea, which is the highest flysch cliff on the Adriatic coast and, of course, the Lipica Stud Farm with its precious Lipizzaner horses. The region is proud of the Sečovlje Salt Pans, which were mentioned for the first time in the 13th century and where salt is still produced the traditional way. Additionally, the Karst landscape pampers visitors with fine wines, while in the attics of traditional stone houses the bora wind cures our famous pršut (Prosciutto ham).

In the western part of the country, between the Alps and the Mediterranean area, where the Slavic, Romanic and Germanic worlds meet and intertwine, the Goriška region formed its strong character over the centuries. In this area there is much beauty to be seen, starting with the spectacular Karst spring of the emerald-coloured Soča River, which brings to the surface the most emerald-coloured Alpine river in the world, which is where the destination took its name from. On the Emerald Trail, the Soča River winds its way through various regions. First, in the emerald-coloured Soča Valley, it flows wildly, then it loosens its creative forces in the southern part in the Brda area, which shines in the shades of yellow Rebula, passing Nova Gorica, which smells of red roses and the Karst area with Idrija and the green Vipava Valley, which are full of redness and wisdom contributed by the Idrijca and Vipava tributaries. On the Emerald Trail, life flows in colours, gaining a rainbow experience of tastes. Get to know them better at the World Exhibition in Milan, where the region is being presented in the second half of May.
