Nativity scenes in Slovenia

In December, Slovenia is covered with a warm blanket of festive atmosphere and numerous nativity scenes are on display around the country. Beautiful nativity scenes are on display in the Franciscan Church and the Cathedral St. Nicholas in Ljubljana. You can enjoy special nativity scenes at spectacular locations in Postojna Cave, Pekel Cave near Celje and the Ice Kingdom in Kranjska Gora.

The first and the largest live nativity scene of the biblical birth of Jesus in the Postojna Cave is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The biblical story about the birth of Jesus comes to life in the most beautiful stalactite environment. Visitors can take a relaxed walk through the Karst underworld and admire the live nativity scene. A festive atmosphere will be enhanced by the Slovenian choirs and choirs from regions near the Slovenian border. Young opera singers will also enchant visitors. The nativity scene will be accompanied by a Christmas Market and other events at the entrance to the Postojna Cave. The nativity scene in the Postojna Cave will be on display from 20 to 29 December.

An unforgettable experience also awaits you in the Pekel Cave, where the Christmas story will come to life for the tenth year in a row. Various choirs, vocal and instrumental groups will create a festive atmosphere, and a visit from Santa Clause is also expected. The Christmas story in the Pekel Cave is scheduled on Christmas Day (25 December) and St. Stephen`s Day (26 December). Do you know how the Pekel (Hell) Cave got its name? The locals used to fear it, since in winter steam rises at times from the cave because of the temperature difference; for them its entrance resembled the devil. Don’t worry; the devil is chased away by the warmth of the festive spirit.

Have you ever seen a live nativity scene, where the actors wear crampons and baby Jesus is surrounded by icy waterfalls instead of a barn? From 25 to 28 December, you can experience a live nativity scene in very special surroundings in Kranjska Gora – in the Ice Kingdom. After a 30-minute performance, you can take a walk through the Ice Kingdom of the Snow Queen, the large crystal hall with frozen waterfalls and jets of water.
