Easter celebrations around Slovenia

Numerous events and customs are connected with Easter in Slovenia. A lot of attention is paid to preparing traditional Slovenian food. During the Easter holidays, many Slovenian kitchens smell of potica (nut roll), and tables are laden with ham and horseradish, while children are busy decorating eggs. You are welcome to the Easter festivities in Slovenia at the beginning of April.

Easter eggs, painted hard-boiled or empty shells, are among the most recognisable symbols of Easter, which is celebrated this year on 5 April. The region of Bela krajina has preserved an interesting tradition of painting and decorating Easter eggs. Make your personal Easter egg with melted beeswax and add black and red paint. Girls used to add beautiful decorations to Easter eggs for their boyfriends to show their affection. In Vrhnika, you can see the unique and protected Vrhnika Easter eggs – patented ornaments made from egg shells bored with tiny holes. The most beautiful patterns and ornaments have more than 10,000 holes, which create a real masterpiece resembling lace. Buy a pisanica or an Easter egg as a gift to your loved ones, or use it to decorate a table full of Easter goodies. In addition to ham and horseradish, potica must also be on every table in Slovenia, usually filled with walnuts or any of some 80 traditional fillings.

On Easter Monday on 6 April, the Easter competition of old-school skiing lovers takes place in Bohinj. The event is organised in memory of the first skiing race in this part of Europe, which took place more than 120 years ago. What is interesting is that the racers descend the slopes around Bohinj on wooden skis and equipment used in that era. Hop onto some skis and join the traditional ski touring journey along the three valleys in Jezersko. Cross the valleys of Ravenska Kočna, Okrešelj and Belska Kočna on skis and get plenty of fresh mountain air.

Join a competition of hitting Easter eggs in the Dolenjska and Gorenjska regions. You can try to hit an egg in a basket with a coin from at least a metre and a half away or with a curved club from six metres away. "Sekanje pirhov" is considered one of the oldest Easter customs in Slovenia and differs from region to region. You can witness a very recent tradition in Mirna Peč near Trebnje or in Križe near Tržič. Take part in the Easter blessing of bikers, which attracts several thousand drivers every year. This is the first bikers` meeting of the year where the bikers prepare for a new motorcycling season.
