Slovenia will be represented at the Expo Milano 2015 world fair with its own pavilion and the slogan “I feel SLOVEnia. Green. Active. Healthy.” and five leading topics: saltpans, bees, thermal and mineral water, hiking, cycling and black carbon measuring. You will be able to feel and experience the country between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea live between 1 May and 31 October in Milan. Slovenia is Italy`s eastern neighbour and its proximity makes it a perfect country to visit. The Slovenian capital of Ljubljana is only 500 kilometres away from Milan, and famous landmarks such as Postojna Cave, the valley of the emerald Soča River, the rolling hills of the Brda region and the Slovenian coast are even closer. Welcome to a country, which has the world love in its very name!

Everything is very close and accessible in Slovenia. The heart of Europe, with 2 million welcoming and hospitable people, invites you to experience events that appeal to all the senses. A short, two-hour ride will take you from the Alpine peaks to the green Mediterranean, from the coast through the underground world to the Pannonian plains. The exceptional diversity of the landscape is also reflected in the design of the Slovenian pavilion at the EXPO Milano 2015. It is a pyramid set on a geometrically diverse surface, built from natural materials – wood and glass. During the exhibition, an interesting presentation of Slovenian regions will take place – they should inspire you to visit them in person! There are countless scenarios for touring around green, active and healthy Slovenia, as the country`s natural beauties are abundant.

Visit Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia and the Green Capital of Europe 2016. Its image has been shaped by various historical periods, but mostly by the oeuvre of the world-famous architect Jože Plečnik. Discover the colourful streets of the old city centre, Baroque fountains, Secessionist architecture and modernist masterpieces. Ljubljana has experienced a revival of culinary events in recent years and is a true paradise for gourmets. Acknowledged Ljubljana chefs, restaurants and traditional dishes are becoming increasingly recognised in the world. Taste Ljubljana with interesting culinary excursions and cooking workshops are also becoming increasingly popular. Slovenian cooking is influenced by Mediterranean, Alpine and Pannonian cuisines. The offer is noticeably characterised by fresh seasonal items from the organic production of nearby farms.

In the far west of Slovenia, near the border with Italy, the beauties of the Emerald Trail invite you. The valley of the Soča River hides many natural wonders, which radiate positive energy. On the Emerald Trail, the Soča winds through various landscapes, from the picturesque Alpine peaks and valleys, the enchanting wine-growing countryside of Brda and the Vipava valley to the hills around Cerkno and the UNESCO-listed Idrija. The rich historical, cultural and technical heritage, a wide range of gambling opportunities, the paradise of adrenaline sports in the emerald Soča River, numerous hiking and cycling paths and a combination of original culinary specialties with quality wines will win you over completely.

Slovenian Istria and the Karst extend from the coast to the mysterious karst world. Take a walk through the old city centres of the coastal towns of Piran, Izola and Koper and hear a story about salt. This “white gold” is appreciated and preserved at the Sečovlje salt pans even today. In Portorož, you can visit numerous spas and gambling centres and let yourself be entertained. The mysterious underground of the Karst and the tunnels of the UNSECO-listed Škocjan Caves will inspire you to explore. Did you know that the biggest underground canyon in Europe is located in these caves? A world-renowned stud farm has operated in nearby Lipica since 1580, home of the thoroughbred Slovenian Lipizzaner horses. Besides hikers and cyclists, the regions also attract numerous climbers and cavers. It is best to end an experience in this part of Slovenia with culinary delights. Have a taste of the Karst prosciutto, dried in the bora wind, and don`t forget to have a glass of high-quality Slovenian wine. The regions of Istria and the Karst are very distinctive, because they produce two completely different wine varieties from the same sort of vine – refosco in Istria and teran in the Karst. Toast to your experience in Slovenia!
