Vipava valley in Slovenia’s southwest radiates all colours of the rainbow among its undulating hills, stone villages, and manors. The green shades of the vineyards and orchards are true balsam for the eyes. The landscape has been marked by water and wind – the bora, which is what gives this region its character, from its energetic locals to the air-dried prosciutto they painstakingly cure. Legend has it that the bora was actually the deciding factor in a battle that divided the Roman empire into two. The Vipava valley has so much to offer! It starts in the sky – if you are lucky enough to be under the canopy of a parachute – and continues down the mountain slopes, littered with hiking and biking trails, which lead the adventurer down to the lush greenery and rushing water in the valley. Pleasure takes on a new level in the vineyard, whether during harvest season or just in a moment of hospitality at the village osmica, a traditional openhouse among the valley’s farmers, who are eager to pour a glass of their wine and serve a plate of their delicacies.

Slovenia is a mini wine Europe. Wine-producing locations in Slovenia rank among the top five per cent in the world. Premium international varieties and indigenous domestic wines are produced here. Try red Teran and Refosco from Primorska, and white Zelen wine from the Vipava Valley and Cviček from Dolenjska. The Goriška Brda Hills are among the most romantic wine-producing regions. Do not miss traditional festivities on St Martin’s Day in November around Slovenia.
