The story of the karst stone with a soft heart

Over 8,000 karst caves are located underneath the surface of Slovenia. With each and every season a different world awaits you at the same place. The home of the Green Karst is the Notranjska region, while the original Karst in the south-western Slovenia gave its name to all karst phenomena across the world. The Karst region lies in south-western Slovenia, but karst phenomena can be found across almost half of Slovenian territory. Over time waters carved large underground caves and created a fantastical world of unusual shapes. Visit and admire its beauty in Postojna Cave, the most visited karst cave in Europe, where you can see proteus. You can continue your exploration in the Unesco heritage site, Škocjan Caves.

Two uniquely Slovenian specialities – Karst prosciutto ham and Teran wine – are a delightful culinary combination on any Karst menu. They taste best when enjoyed in the company of good friends or at the Teran and Prosciutto Festival in Dutovlje. If you get caught in the karst Bora, a gusting, cold and yet mostly dry wind, warm up with a shot of Brkini plum brandy or karst gin.
