Hiking through the green uncovered beauty of Slovenia

In Slovenia, a land between the Alps and the Mediterranean, something green, mysterious and magical can happen to you every day. Put on your hiking shoes and venture out on one of the many hiking trails, which lead over mountain peaks and passes, through forests and past blaze trail markings; the trans-Slovenian trails stand out because they are the longest and are connected with neighbouring countries. Individual trails uncover the beauty of European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) and those much-loved beauty spots most favoured by people from those parts. Join the groups of hikers on organised hiking festivals and events. Pristine green nature is accessible to everyone at every step in Slovenia. It is always close at hand, a mere stone’s throw even from large towns. Hiking is a popular activity in Slovenia since there are as many as 10,000 kilometres of prepared trails.

Pristine green nature is accessible to everyone at every step in Slovenia. It is always close at hand, a mere stone’s throw even from large towns. Hiking is a popular activity in Slovenia since there are as many as 10,000 kilometres of prepared trails, which are marked with a Knafelc blaze, a white dot inside a red ring, which has been used for marking mountain trails since 1922. Blazes also mark the longest trans-Slovenian trail, the Slovenian Mountain Trail or the Transversal, which is the oldest European long-distance trail connecting Maribor and Ankaran. Two European long-distance walking paths, E6 from the Baltic to the Adriatic and E7 from the Atlantic to the Black Sea also pass through Slovenia. Hikers are also excited about the Alpe Adria Trail, which connects Slovenia, Austria and Italy.

Venture out on the path of the European Destinations of Excellence - EDEN and Slovenia’s hidden gems. Start your journey of green magic in the north of the country, where the Jezersko Valley is hidden between the high Grintovci peaks. This Alpine paradise was formed by a glacier which created a picturesque landscape with a mountain lake. Not far away is the Logar Valley in Solčavsko, one of the most picturesque glacial valleys in Europe which stuns the eye with its picture perfect beauty. Follow our tips for discovering the mysteries of the karst landscape. Kras (Karst) is the common denominator of all karst phenomena in the world. They are created by water which forms calcareous shapes underground and karst phenomena on the surface. The Mt Peca underground network in the Koroška region is also special. It was not formed by water, but by miners. You can walk, cycle or even kayak in the former mining tunnels. Kayaks can also be used when exploring the green Kolpa River, which is known to be one of the cleanest and warmest rivers in Slovenia. The valley of the river, full of life, attracts adrenaline junkies and lovers of active holidays in nature. Everyone with a sweet tooth can visit the land of juicy apples - Kozjansko. Enjoy a stroll in the orchards and bite into delicious apples growing on trees that surround you.
