Half a millennium of mining left a priceless technical, industrial and cultural heritage in Idrija. Over 700 kilometres of tunnels extend under the town, from which more than 147,000 tons of mercury were extracted over the years, which is material enough for two Cheops pyramids. Anthony`s Main Road is one of the oldest preserved entrances to the mine. In its tunnels, you may greet Perkmandeljc, the mine elf, who kept the miners’ company, helped them dig and also played tricks on them. Learn about the history of Idrija at Idrija Municipal Museum and at Gewerkenegg Castle, which is considered the best European museum of industrial and technical heritage and was once the seat of the management and storage for Idrija Mine. Exceptional heritage is also presented by Idrija lace. Its distinctive form and established method of lace-making with seven pairs of bobbins has been continuously maintained at the Lace-Making School, established in 1876. You can also become a lace-making expert and display your art at the traditional Idrija Lace Festival which takes place every June.

Idrija’s surroundings offer many opportunities for active holidays. The life of the local people is closely connected with water. Be enchanted by many dams and the murmur of streams in Zgornja Idrijca Natural Park. Experience the mystery and power of water at Wild Lake, the largest Karst spring in Slovenia and the first Slovenian outdoor museum.

Food tastes good after a day-long exploration. Traditional Idrija žlikrofi have a potato filling. They also hold the European mark of Traditional Speciality Guaranteed. They are best with bakalca, a lamb and vegetable sauce, but may also be accompanied by other dishes.
