Huffington Post recommends learning of Slovenian language

The Huffington Post has listed six reasons why Slovenian language is unique and why more people should speak it. The columnists of the American online newspaper were particularly impressed with the diversity of the country which provides an excellent environment for a perfect holiday and loyalty of the Slovenians to their language although many speak English well.

The uniqueness of Slovenia is not displayed only in its diverse landscape which combines the Alps with the Mediterranean and the Pannonian Plain with the Karst. Its unique feature is also the diversity of the Slovenian language. In the course of history, many dialects developed in the valleys, basins, mountains and plains. Over 40 official dialects are combined in seven dialect groups: Gorenjska, Štajerska, Koroška, Rovtarska, Primorska, Dolenjska and Panonska. In spite of different dialects, the majority of Slovenians speak at least one foreign language, which is usually English, followed by Italian and Hungarian, which are also official languages due to national minorities living in the Primorska and Prekmurje regions.

Slovenian is one of the few languages in the world which uses the dual. As a country bearing the word “love” in its name, the dual reflects this beautiful emotion and is a perfect language for lovers and romance. Slovenian is also a polite language since it uses a plural form of address thus expressing respect towards another (second) person.

Slovenian is spoken by somewhat more than two million people living in the country and by migrants. It is a South Slavic language, similar to Serbian and spoken Russian; however, the official orthography is not Cyrillic, but Gaj`s Latin alphabet or Latin alphabet. The alphabet consists of 25 letters which in different combinations form the wealth of the Slovenian language.
