Walk along the Wire and Trio Race in Ljubljana

Slovenia’s capital has a vivid history. Pile dwellers once lived here and later on, the Romans. During the Second World War, Ljubljana was surrounded by barbed wire, and today’s inhabitants are happy to celebrate the anniversary of the day when the capital was freed from occupation. Join the commemoration of liberation on the traditional Walk along the Wire, or participate in the Trio Race with two friends. Ljubljana is particularly active between 7 and 9 May.

Slovenia’s capital was surrounded by barbed wire during the Second World War and controlled by Italian and later German occupying forces. Ljubljana was freed of its barbed wire on 9 May 1945. To commemorate that day, the largest sports and recreational event in Slovenia,Walk along the Wire, is held every year. Since 1957 the organisers aim to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Join the many hikers on the 59th traditional Walk along the Wire between 7 and 9 May. The event traditionally starts with children from Ljubljana kindergartens and reaches a peak on Saturday, when hikers walk a section or the entire route around Ljubljana, which is 35 kilometres.

On the last day, the hikers are joined by the joggers in the Trio Race: an endurance test between three joggers. This event promotes motivation, mutual help and team spirit. Run 12.5 or 29 kilometres with your friends along the route of the once occupied Ljubljana.

You can follow the route of the wire any time you visit Ljubljana. The 35-kilometre circular path is marked with PST (Path of Remembrance and Comradeship) and takes you through town districts and to the outskirts of the capital. Among other places, you will walk around Rožnik Hill, which borders on Tivoli Park, Ljubljana’s largest park. The path crosses one of the most beautiful European cemeteries Žale, an architectural masterpiece of Jože Plečnik, and passes the astronomical observatory on Golovec Hill to arrive at Ljubljana Marshes, where the oldest wooden wheel with an axlein the world was found, which dates back more than 5,000 years.
