A flower is most beautiful if left where it grows. The Iris of Bohinj (Iris cengialti f. vochinensis) is certainly one of the most beautiful flowers that can be admired in Bohinj and is a true botanical particularity. Due to these beautiful and delicated flowers, it has been brought from its natural sites to gardens. It became the trademark of the International Wild Flower Festival in Bohinj.

The diverse Slovenian territory connecting the Pannonian Plain with the Mediterranean is also home to many other plants. Arboretum Volčji Potok, located near Ljubljana, is one of the most important garden heritage sites in Slovenia. Did you know that it has been declared a cultural monument of national importance? Take a walk along the carefully maintained gardens of the former castle complex. Visit Mozirski gaj in the Savinja Valley, considered one of the most beautiful parks in this part of Europe. Along maintained paths and lawns, there is also a farmhouse, a smithy, a bee house and other small ethnographic facilities which present the lives of the local people in the past. The Botanical Garden, which has been open in the centre of the capital since 1810, also has an impressive history. It is considered the oldest botanical garden in south-eastern Europe and houses over 4,500 plants.
