The Diversities along the Green Kolpa River

Welcome to Bela krajina, the most southern region in Slovenia. Unique culture, cities and villages and hospitable locals invite you to take an unforgettable break here. Listen to the stories along the Kolpa river which is located at the far south edge of Slovenia and is a border river with the neighbouring Croatia. Let yourself be touched by the harmony of nature in an area of rich biodiversity.

Bela krajina provides for countless possibilities for active holidays in the wild. You may discover the varied surrounding of the Kolpa river by bicycle or on foot. One part of the path runs just on the border with neighbouring Croatia. The path is narrow enough and is liked by mountain biking fans. Take a canoe or kayak to go down the flow of the Kolpa River. You may borrow boats in numerous sports centres on the river and go rowing against the flow. Or you may be taken by kind locals to a spot situated higher up where you may enjoy the relaxed river flow. On the way there, dragon flies will keep you company, and with a little bit of luck, you may come face to face with an otter or a European pond turtle which is the only indigenous Slovenian turtle.

Numerous trees along the river and nearby clearings form pleasant shade for camps. The access to water and water jumps are arranged for visitors nearby. A quick jump into the water feels refreshing after a joyful match of volleyball or football at the playing fields near the river.

The landscape is famous for pottery, embroidery, wicker baskets and painted Easter eggs decorated with beeswax called belokranjska pisanica. The environment will fill you with energy because numerous energy points and vital-energy centres are located in the neighbourhood.

The energy and the environment of the Kolpa River are liked by the kingfisher, a charming brightly coloured bird which is hard to miss. You will recognise it by its attractive vivid and colourful feathers making him distinctive from other birds. In addition to Kolpa, the Lahinja River also runs across Bela krajina. Its river basin is composed of Karst springs which together form the Lahinja Landscape Park.

Hit the Belokranjska Wine Road which is composed of three wine districts: Črnomelj, Metlika and Semič district. Taste a glass of local Belokranjec wine or Metliška črnina wine. When in company, it will best be combined with a slice of delicious Bela krajina flatbread or roasted lamb.
