Special culinary experiences in Ljubljana, Maribor and Celje

In Slovenia, the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. A mixture of recipes, spices, flavours, fresh vegetables and fruit inspires many local and foreign chefs. The tradition of 24 culinary regions, 14 wine-producing districts and modern cooking approaches can be noticed on almost every plate in Slovenia. Enjoy culinary delights at Open Kitchens in Ljubljana and Celje, and at Chef-la and Pun pisker in Maribor, unique markets of flavours.

Open Kitchen has become a permanent feature of Ljubljana and is popular among locals and visitors. This unique market of flavours on Pogačar Square is open every sunny Friday between March and October. Stalls with delicious food have also been introduced to the town of counts, Celje. Open Kitchen, which can be found at the Town Market in the centre of Celje, combines local restaurants and also caterers, who otherwise serve their food at the Open Kitchen in Ljubljana. Visitors can taste traditional Slovenian dishes and international specialities from different corners of the world.

The culinary experience is served also in the second largest town in Slovenia. The best flavours of Maribor are featured at weekly events called Pun pisker. Leon Štukelj Square transforms itself donning chef uniforms every Friday from 10 a.m. onward and serves delicious food at stalls. Supreme chefs prepare tasty meals which can be upgraded with a fine selection of local wines and beers. At least 16 caterers from Maribor serve their best food. Weekly menus can be found here.

Homemade food with a twist is prepared at stalls in Maribor at the Chef-la events. Dishes made from locally produced ingredients create the flavour of the summer. The lovely aroma of carski praženec (type of omelette), plum dumplings or almost forgotten stews wafts over Maribor’s Freedom Square.
